championing a cause

One of the best articles I've read in yonks about gay marriage appears in - of all places - The Herald Sun.
In the by-line it says Martina Navratilova is a former world number 1. She's still a number 1 in my books.

  1. That will be a very effective piece for winning hearts and minds.

  2. I like the part about going back in time.

People get nostalgic about the "good old days". There's the idea that things were simpler back then. They forget that bigotry was more accepted, and life was far from wonderful for many people.

Or maybe some of them do remember, and that's what they crave.

  3. I believe in human rights for everyone. But I find it hard to understand the fuss over marriage. Many hetros don't bother getting married and live happily together forever. The defacto laws should be the same for everybody.

  4. Hi Andrew,
It's one of those "I wish I'd said that" pieces.

    Hi Dina,
There are times when I pine for "the good old days" but, of course, there are only some things I wish hadn't changed. On the whole, people are nicer now.

    Hi Diane,
I agree with you on every point. Certainly, things are a lot better here for gays than in other countries, including the U.S.A.
Unfortunately, there are still a few little bumps to iron out, for example, making an intended spouse visa available to gays.
The worst thing, though, is that every time something against gay marriage pops up - and Court's comments provide a good example - it goes beyond the subject of marriage and dredges up a whole heap of negatives. It's not nice to say any one deliberately chooses an immoral lifestyle that is destroying the fabric of society.
On another level, given young people are already committing suicide at an alarming rate, young gays don't need more pressure to marry someone of the opposite sex. In the long run it's not fair to their spouse or their children.

  5. That just cuts through the c**p, doesn't it?? I also fail to see why I, or anyone else, should live by the rules supposedly set by someone's imaginary friend!!

  6. Red, I think the expression "imaginary friend" cuts through a fair bit of crap, too. ROFLMAO.
